चिपको आंदोलन इतिहास का एक ऐतिहासिक आंदोलन है। यह आंदोलन 1973 में उत्तर प्रदेश (बाद में उत्तराखंड) के हिमालयी क्षेत्र में उत्पन्न हुआ और तेजी से पूरे भारतीय हिमालय में फैल गया। हिंदी शब्द चिपको का अर्थ है "गले लगाना" या "चिपकना"।
गांधीवादी कार्यकर्ता सुंदरलाल बहुगुणा ने आंदोलन को एक दिशा दी और भारत की तत्कालीन प्रधान मंत्री इंदिरा गांधी से उनकी अपील के परिणामस्वरूप पेड़ों को काटने पर प्रतिबंध लगा दिया गया।

The idea of Chipko movement was given by his wife and the action was taken by him.
The Chipko movement started in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. At that time, people started this movement in Mandal village of Alaknanda valley falling in Uttar Pradesh. In 1973, forest department contractors started cutting down the forest trees. Seeing the forests being cut like this, farmers opposed it in large numbers and the Chipko movement started.
