Tungnath Temple
Tungnath Temple in Rudraprayag District is a famous Temple. Tungnath Temple is situated in the top of the Tungnath mountains located in Rudraprayag District of Garhwal in Uttarakhand state. Tungnath Templeis built at an altitude of 3460 meters and is the highest among the Panch Kedars. Tungnath Temple is believed to be 1000 of years old and Lord Shiva is worshiped here as one of the Panch Kedars. It is believed that this temple was built by the Pandavas to please Lord Shiva, who was disgusted with the Pandavas due to the massacre in Kurukshetra. This temple is built with very beautiful architecture and there are many temples around it, which is very amazing. The peak of Tungnath is the source of three streams from which the river Achakamini forms. The temple is located 3 kms from Chopta. It is said that Parvati Mata did penance before marriage here to please Shiva.
History of the Tungnath Temple
The history of the Tungnath temple is associated with the Poranic Kathayas.According to legend, it is believed that the Pandavas started their journey to find Lord Shiva after killing their cousins in the Kurukshetra war. Lord Shiva was angry with all the deaths, so he wanted to avoid the Pandavas as a result of which he was transformed into an ox and all his body parts disintegrated at different places. His cube appeared in Kedarnath, daughter-in-law in Tungnath, head in Rudranath, navel in Madhyameshwar and javelin in Kalpeshwar. A temple Tungnath Temple was built by the Pandavas to worship and please Lord Shiva. The name of the temple is derived as ‘Tung’ meaning weapons and ‘Nath’ symbol of Lord Shiva.
The Tungnath Temple is the major part of the Panch Kedar (five temples dedicated to Lord Shiva) and is the first temple to be visited during the Panch Kedar Yatra . The four temples that form part of this journey are Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar and Kalpeshwar. Each of these five pilgrimage sites has a special religious and cultural significance, and they all come as part of a journey. It is also believed that this is the place where the arms of Lord Shiva appeared.
Best Time to Visit Tungnath Temple
It can be traveled here from May to November. Though the journey can be done during the rest of the time, but due to snowfall the vehicle travel is less and the journey is more on foot. One can go here to enjoy the snow in the months of January and February.

Tungnath Temple Opening And Close Dates
The Tungnath Temple opens on a date fixed by the Kedar Mandir Committee which is opened every year during the month of Vaishakh Panchami in the month of April or May. And Tungnath temple is closed during the month of November in the winter season after Diwali. And after the temple is closed, the idol of God is transferred to Muktinath. Which is 19 km from Tungnath. And this is why the Lord is worshiped by the temple priests at Mukutnath.
