History of Champawat

History of Champawat- Champawat is a town in the Champawat district in Uttarakhand, India. It is also the district headquarters.

Champawat has been the capital of the rulers of Kumaon for many years. The remains of the Chand rulers’ fort can still be seen in Champawat.

Champawat has a special place in the history of Kumaon. According to a book called Gurupaduka, Champavati, the sister of serpents, did penance near the Baleshwar temple in Champawat.

The temple of Champavati in his memory is still located inside the Baleshwar temple complex. According to Vayu Purana, Champavati Puri was the capital of nine Naga dynasty kings. During the British rule in 1872, along with Pauri, Champawat was given the status of Tehsil. This marginal tehsil of Almora district was included in the Pithoragarh district in 1972. On 15 September 1997, Champawat got the status of a district.
