History of Pithoragarh
Pithoragarh is a district in the state of Uttarakhand, Tibet in the north, Nepal in the east, Almora in the south-east and Chamoli in the north-west. The old name of Pithoragarh is Sorghati. The meaning of Sor is – Saroor. It is believed that earlier there were seven lakes in this valley. The water of the lake kept drying up day by day and the plateau land was born here. Due to being a plateau land, it was named Pithoragarh.
Pithoragarh was a tehsil in the Almora district. Pithoragarh district was formed on 24 February 1960 from this one tehsil. On 13 May 1972, Champawat tehsil was removed from Almora district and merged with Pithoragarh. Pithoragarh has 13 Tehsils and 8
Blocks, There are 87 Nyaya Panchayats in Pithoragarh, 808 Gram Sabhas and 2324 small and big villages in them.
