Ganga Dussehra: Significance, Legends, Rituals, and Celebrations in Uttarakhand

What is Ganga Dussehra?

Ganga Dussehra is a significant Hindu festival observed annually on the tenth day (Dashami) of the waxing moon in the month of Jyeshtha (May or June). In 2025, it will be celebrated on June 5. This festival marks the descent of the sacred River Ganga from heaven to Earth and holds deep religious and cultural significance across India, especially in Uttarakhand, where the river originates.

The Legend Behind Ganga Dussehra

According to Hindu mythology, Ganga Dussehra commemorates the day when the River Ganga descended to Earth to purify the souls of King Sagar’s sons. This divine intervention was made possible by King Bhagirath, who performed intense penance to bring Ganga down from the heavens to liberate his ancestors.

However, the force of Ganga’s descent could have destroyed the Earth. Lord Shiva intervened by catching the river in his matted locks and gently releasing her onto the land. Because of Bhagirath’s unwavering efforts, the river is also known as Bhagirathi in her upper Himalayan course.

Why Is Ganga Dussehra Celebrated?

Ganga is not just a river in India—it is revered as a goddess who purifies and liberates. Ganga Dussehra is believed to offer liberation from the ten types of sins:

  • 3 Physical sins (Kāyik)
  • 4 Verbal sins (Vāchik)
  • 3 Mental sins (Mānasik)

On this day, devotees take a holy dip in the river, offer prayers, and participate in charitable acts in hopes of spiritual cleansing and blessings.
