Almora is an important city in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is also the headquarters of the Almora district. Almora has situated 365 km north-east the national capital New Delhi and 415 km south-east the state capital Dehradun. It lies in the revenue Division Kumaon and is located 63 km north of Nainital, the administrative headquarters of Kumaon.

Almora was founded by King Balo Kalyan Chand in 158. Since the time of Mahabharata (7th and 8th century BCE), details of human settlements are found in the hills and surrounding areas. Almora was the capital of the Chandvanshi kings who ruled the Kumaon state. Almora has a special hand in the freedom struggle and in the upliftment of education, art, and culture.

Today's historians believe that in 1573 AD, King Balo Kalyanchand of the Chand Dynasty had established this city in the name of Alamnagar. The first capital of the Chand dynasty was Champawat. Kalyanchand well understood the importance of this place. Then he changed from Champawat to this Alamnagar (Almora) as his capital. From 1573 to 1890, Almora's religious geographical, and historical importance was pioneering in many directions. Meanwhile, many important historical and political events also took place. Almora continued to represent the entire Kumaon region in literary and cultural terms as well.

By Air: The Nearest Airport to Almora is at Pantnagar, the seat of a famous agricultural university, about 127 KMs from Almora. Taxes are easily available from Pantnagar to Almora.

By Train: The nearest railway station is at Kathgodam situated around 90 KMs away. And, then you can hire a cab/taxi or a bus. Taxes are easily available from Haldwani to Almora.
